Dr Webb studied medicine at the University of Melbourne graduating in 1993 (M.B;B.S) with first class honours in paediatrics and pharmacology. She completed 2 years of Adult Medical training before completing Specialist Paediatric Medical training at the Royal Children's Hospital (RCH), Melbourne, first as a General Paediatrician in 2003 and then sub-specialising as a Paediatric Gastroenterologist in 2006. She was fortunate to be trained in paediatric and adult endoscopy by mentors such as Professor Don Cameron, Past President of GESA, and A/Prof Gregor Brown, Head of Endoscopy at the Alfred Hospital & Dr Kerry Breen, St Vincents Hospital.

Dr Webb has a public appointment (Gastroenterologist/Clinical hypnotherapist), VMO, in the Department of Gastroenterology at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, City Campus.

At the suggestion of the Ex-Director of Gastroenterology at RCH, Professor Anthony Catto-Smith, Annette was fortunate to be given an opportunity to develop an interest in functional gut disorders as a gastroenterology fellow. Annette continued to follow her interest in mind body medicine and pyscho-neuro-gastroenterology and was awarded a Doctor of Medicine (M.D) for her work  researching novel therapies (gut focused hypnotherapy) for Adolescents with Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). To undertake this research she was awarded MCRI and NHMRC postgraduate scholarships. To support this research, she also completed a Diploma of Clinical Hypnotherapy, Uni of Melbourne. Annette was lucky to be mentored through this process by Professor Susan Sawyer, Current President of the International Association of Adolescent Health and Foundation Chair of Adolescent Medicine, Uni of Melbourne.

Annette has also had formal training in Clinical Nutrition and coordinated a large parenteral nutrition RCT (under the mentor-ship of Professor Julie Bines, Head of Clinical Nutrition at RCH) in critically ill neonates at RCH, Melbourne, whilst undertaking her MD. She then headed the IBS clinic (Functional Gut Disorders Clinic) at RCH from 2003 until 2011 and was a staff specialist at RCH Melbourne, Monash Children's Southern Health and Cabrini Medical Centre where she performed endoscopy services for children and adolescents.

Annette has been fortunate to receive prestigious postgraduate awards including an Astra-Zenica Emerging leaders in Medicine Award.

Annette was Foundation Director of Paediatric Integrative Medicine at the National Institute of Integrative Medicine, Melbourne ; and has undertaken formal training in Mindfulness Therapy and SMT (Stillness Meditation Therapy).

Annette has had formal training in child and adolescent psychiatry including individual and group psychotherapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.  Dr Webb has had extensive formal training in Child & Adolescent Psychotherapy and engages in regular peer review, formal supervision and ongoing professional development in this area.

Annette served as President Elect of the Australian Society of Hypnosis (ASH) for 2 years and then became inaugurated as the President of the Society in October 2021. In this role, she provides leadership, teaching and advocacy and is an official AMA mentor, providing mentorship for younger generations of doctors.

Annette's private practice in East Melbourne, focuses on her areas of interest in clinical hypnotherapy and functional gut disorders, utilising all aspects of her training.

In her spare time, Annette enjoys simple things like just being around her children and the family dog, gardening and watching a bit of TV with her husband. She has recently started playing womens cricket, with Richmond Union Cricket Club, being an avid cricket fan all of her life. She is very happy that her families football team, Richmond Tigers, won the grand final in 2020. Go tiges!

FOR PATIENTS

How many sessions will

What happens during a session?

Will I lose control?

new blob WITH old STUFF FROM FOR PATIENTS

Typically 4 to 6 sessions (each session lasts 50 minutes) are required but it may be more or less depending on the condition being treated.  All patients will return to their referring practitioner for ongoing management of the child or adolescent after completion of hypnotherapy sessions.

What is Hypnotherapy

&

what conditions can it treat?

There are many myths about hypnosis. In fact, hypnosis is a naturally occurring state of consciousness that can be used with great therapeutic benefit. During hypnosis, the mind is more open to suggestion than usual. A trained therapist using hypnosis can assist the child to access inner resources which include helping the child feel more confident, calmer and more able to deal with fears. During therapy suggestions are made by a trained therapist, unique to the child's problems, which can be taken up by the unconscious mind to assist with symptoms that the child may be having. In general children respond extremely well to hypnotherapy and find it very enjoyable as well as beneficial. Hypnosis can be used for the following conditions (see attached brochure under brochures section)

How many sessions will

I need?

Typically 4 to 6 sessions (each session lasts about 50-60 minutes) are required but it may be more or less depending on the condition being treated.  All patients will return to their referring practitioner for ongoing management of the child or adolescent after completion of hypnotherapy sessions unless deemed medically necessary to see another doctor.

What happens during a session?

Like all medical consultations a detailed history will be taken and a management plan tailored to the child will be outlined. Hypnotherapy will typically occur at the second session tailored specifically to the unique needs of the child and their problem. A recording of the session will be provided for practice at home between sessions.

Can anyone be hypnotised?

What are the side effects?

Nearly all patients can be hypnotised.

There are very few side effects of this therapy and most children and young people find it an enjoyable and natural experience. Being cared for by a trained hypnotherapist ensures that if issues were to arise during the session they will be dealt with promptly.

Will I lose control?

Prior to any hypnotherapy being performed informed consent is obtained and the child and family will be told about the suggestions that will be applied.  This ensures that the child and family understands they are in control of what will occur during the session.

Is this evidenced base medicine?

There is a large body of medical and psychological research which shows hypnotherapy to be beneficial in a wide array of conditions. Dr Webb's doctoral thesis contains a comprehensive reference list and a list of papers from the thesis and other research can be provided upon request. Copies of relevant papers may also be obtained upon request.
